Drew Barrymore, who is intermarried to Will Kopelman and is raising their two young daughters in her husband’s Jewish faith, is back in the spotlight with a new movie and memoir. The actress-director-producer just published Wildflower, an account of her rather wild youth. She’s also starring in Miss You Already with Toni Collette as longtime best friends who face life crises: Drew’s character struggles to get pregnant and Collete’s is diagnosed with breast cancer. “It’s a platonic love story, and it’s also funny,” says Barrymore. “It will move you but it will also make you appreciate what you have and make you want to call your best friend.” It hits theaters on November 6.

Peter Berg, who wears multiple hats as an actor, writer, director and producer (Friday Night Lights, The Leftovers and Lone Survivor are just a few of his credits) directs and narrates the first installment of the six-part National Geographic Channel documentary series Breakthrough, which premieres November 1. The first episode, Fighting Pandemics, is about new discoveries in finding cures for infectious diseases like Ebola, and it’s a fascinating look at how such viruses spread and how scientists are working to stop them. Berg is the product of an interfaith marriage—his father was Jewish and his mother was Christian.
