Lisa

Hello! My question is “What is the right age to convert?”
I’m 17 years old, I’m Orthodox Catholic, but for three years now I’ve been going to Jewish camps, to Sabbaths, all my close friends are Jewish. I’ve talked a lot with rabbis in my city. And I’ve been feeling for a long time now that I don’t belong in the Orthodox Church, but Judaism answers almost all my questions. I’ve been thinking about conversion for about two years now, but I don’t know if the age of 17 is the right time to do it.
One of the reasons I want to convert is because I really want to have a Jewish family and follow traditions.
Also it’s believed in our family that my grandmother’s father on my mother’s side was Jewish, but it’s not proven yet, because he lived in Ukraine and died in the Second World War, when my grandma was still a baby.
I really hope you can help me with this question.
Thanks.

Lisa,

There isn’t a “right” age to convert – the process is rather individual and unique for each person considering becoming a Jew. As you’re already talking with rabbis in your city, I’d recommend asking them what the process involves and whether they would be willing to work with you. Meanwhile, continue exploring and experiencing Judaism with (and without) your friends.

Best of luck,
Benjamin

Hey Lisa, I just wanna say that I can relate to what you’re feeling, as I myself wanted to convert at a young age, I wasn’t even a teenager yet. I too have Jewish ancestry, but my family wasn’t supportive with my decision… I thought, out of ignorance, that there was no such thing as a conversion to judaism, so I kindda lived with the idea, but something inside of me kept on moving me towards it…
My situation, however, is different, I am married to a wonderful Christian Evangelical woman and we have a 5 year old son, she supports me in this 100%, but we just don’t know how are we going to brake the news to her family, mine is alright with it now that I am 33 yrs old. What I’m trying to say is… don’t wait too long, follow your heart, because if you’re feeling things and those feelings become a need, well, it sure is means something, something wonderful.
best,
Ed.
