Ignorant - or just plain right?
Sep 15th, 2006 by Rachel
I’ve been on hiatus for a bit, which is a long story…and it’ll make a good couple blog entries in the very near future. But I had to say this…
I just got a comment on the previous entry, about the kosher barbecuing. The commentator, “Dave,” wrote the following:
Since there is no Jewish prohibition on the eating of treif by a Gentile why would it matter what your husband ate?
Religiously observant? Try religiously ignorant
So I’m ignorant? Well, Dave, of course there’s no Jewish prohibition on a non-Jew eating treif. That wasn’t the point of my entry at all!
My qualms about the barbecue issue were that treif meat was being prepared on the same grill as my kosher food. Do you see the difference? If his treif meat touched my food, it too would become treif - and the grill would be treif as well.
Anyone interested in reading a really good explanation of the laws of kashrut can take a look at Judaism 101. One line reads: “Utensils that have come into contact with non-kosher food may not be used with kosher food.”
I am admittedly ignorant about many things, but this isn’t one of them.

Since you described yourself as religiously observant I assumed you already had separate utensils, plates, grills, etc for treif and kosher food (the only way I could imagine to live ‘religiously observant’ and intermarried).
Some (but not me) might say that any food, kosher or treif touched by a gentile become treif, and any utensils used by a Gentile become treif
However ‘religiously knowledgable’ you are, ‘religiously observant’ you obviously are not
See www.jewishgates.com/file.asp?File_ID=1058
Should read touched by a Gentile while cooking
PS If you’re so ‘religiously observant’ shouldn’t you be apologising to me in the next few days for Lashon Hora?
If… if… Big if… I have wronged you then I apologise.
Wow. I just stumbled upon this blog and I’m shocked to see Dave’s comments here. I don’t know Rachel and I don’t know Dave, so I have no personal opinions about them as people and will not express any assumed generalities about them.
However, I’m shocked to see that Rachel’s comments about her personal life and observances are so critical to Dave’s life that it warranted four comments over 30 minutes. Dave — that’s very bad manners in the blogosphere. If you don’t like what someone blogs, move on to a different blog. Drop it. Get over it. Get a life. There’s certainly no need to be rude. Especially at this time of the year!
