I actually met my husband, who is Colombian, when I was working on a film project in Colombia. He now lives in the U.S.with me. We have been to Colombia several times, and I can't imagine not knowing the cultural context of his origin. It would be impossible to understand him. The beauty, violence, the history, and the traditions of the country are an inseperable part of my husband, and I'm so happy to have the opportunity to be part of this. It has also given me a way to understand some of our differences, and why with see things in certain ways. |

Yes, the street name is right, assuming the synagogue is still there. I haven't been there in many years. Perhaps your friend should call the American or Israeli embassy/consulate in Portugal for information. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

A friend of mine will be traveling in Lisbon this fall (2000) and wants to attend synagogue services on Yom Kippur. Where is the synagogue? All she knows is "Avenue Herculano." Is this right? |

As a Portuguese allways feel proud of mypart of the world. As for the Portuguese jews, i.m one of them. I had to come to the US to be able to go back to thefaith that was once stolen from my ancestors. The inqisition was a terrible thing. It makes a very good movie.I was in Portugal last year and visited the Porto Sinagogue. This temple has a nice history. Finaly after being closed for so long , now is open on request and Friday there is some services. In lisbon the sinagogue is open and visited by lots of people. I was told that in Portugal lots of people are now discovering that the names are stange and finding out they are descendents of jews. Some will glad return , others still thinking. The problem is in Portugal, there is no program to help this people return, wich is sad!!!!i was lucky. Here in America i met a Rabbi , with him i study and i learn to be a jew. Today i attend services. I.m very proud i own this to our people, my ancestors, and i.m glad after lost in the desert for so manny years i came home to my people. It is a touching thing for me to talk about it. Any one interested in more info, please contact me at ......news1253@yahoo.com
I will do my best to help. Shalom...........Placido Teixeira
