Agudath B'nai Israel

About Us:

Our community goes back more than 100 years although the first congregation was not chartered until 1902. The congregation, as we now know it, resulted from the merger in 1925 of three distinct but smaller congregations -- Agudath Achim, B'nai B'rith and Beth Israel -- hence, our name. As a result of this merger, a unique feature of the congregation is the two, parallel High Holiday services -- "English" and "Traditional" -- embodying the theme of the Conservative movements: "Unity in Diversity." We welcome Shabbat with a sunset Kaballat Shabbat service throughout the year. This is augmented by a late Friday night service on scheduled days and a Shabbat morning service which is held 52 weeks a year. The Shabbat morning service is followed by a sit-down Kiddush often sponsored by congregants in celebration of special occasions. Weekday minyanim are arranged on an individual basis to enable traditional observance of yahrzeits. Sukkot, Pesach and Shavuoth are celebrated at services; events such as a Family Sukkot Supper, Consecration (at Simchat Torah) and Confirmation (on Shavuot) complement their observance. Our synagogue was constructed in 1968. The 283-seat sanctuary is walled on three sides by stained glass screens, designed by the award-winning artist, Douglas Phillips of Cleveland. Twelve panels, six on each side, concentrate on the themes of Torah and the history of the Jewish people, working in symbols of both contemporary design and color. The sanctuary is separted from a foyer and social hall by two sets of movable walls. This flexibility allows for an additional 350 temporary seats. The kosher kitchen facilities adjacent to the auditorium are equipped to serve more than 250 people. The building houses an educational wing with ten classrooms including a children's library and Junior Congregation Chapel. In addition, there is a small chapel with 68 seats capable of expanding to 110, an atrium (the site of our Sukkah and summer weddings) and a youth recreation room. Our more than 3000 volume library circulates books on an open shelf honor system.
