The Festival of Lights is one of the major highlights of our year at the Temple, with the presentation of our original Chanukah Cantata, “A Light Through the Ages.” Accompanied by singers and instrumentalists from the world renowned ensemble Emmanuel Music, this free holiday experience celebrates Chanukah’s deep spiritual meaning through story and song – and explores messages of major contemporary importance for people of all religious traditions. In a narrative composed by Rabbi Berman, the legacy of the holiday throughout Jewish history is recalled, highlighted by classical, contemporary and traditional folk music. The Cantata culminates in a powerfully dramatic candle lighting ceremony in the darkened Sanctuary, as everyone holds a taper and receives the light of the Menorah to share with others. Since the inauguration of A Light Through the Ages in 2010, this event has emerged as a popular holiday experience in Boston, alongside the many other musical and religious programs of the season. In 2010 and 2011, over 750 people of all faiths attended the Chanukah celebration, and we look forward to continuing to build this unique community outreach. This year’s Service will be held on Sunday, December 9, 2012, at 4:00 PM. Please visit the special website: www.alightthroughtheages.org.
