Tattoos are no bigger a "no no" than not following any other commandment. And, interestingly enough, there are tshuvos (responsa) dating back a few hundred years that outline the permissibly of tattoos while still following, according to the rabbis who wrote these answers, the intended halakha of not permanently "marring" one's body.
