@ Doug, I am sorry you are having to go through that. I don't feel Judaism should be pushed on anyone.
We had an Intro to Judaism class that I went through before converting in Reform. Just like the article said, it was more like a come if you want and if you don't return, well no one will be bugging you.
There was one gentleman and his wife that had a young son, age 5 or 6 and a newborn. He went through the class, the children are being raised Jewish, but he did not feel he could commit. I think everyone was fine with it. We both had come from the same previous religion, so we had a few deep discussions about the implications of becoming a Jew. I still feel he will be an associate member of our synagogue community especially since he is a parent. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
In regard to the article, I saw Charlotte's Conversion, one must remember Sex in the City is a comedy and not a documentary. It was not very realistic, but it was entertaining. Sometimes I do feel a little Charlotte-like around my boyfriend's family especially if I try to say anything in Yiddish. Let me get the Hebrew under control first. My JBB grandmother came from a different Jewish community where German was the primary language and she never really said anything in Yiddish. Sometimes I even understand the Yiddish because it is so close to the German I learned. It's a little sad under the circumstances.
