After watching that film, years after it was first made, I had to know if Marc got out of that place.  Anyone who saw peace on that benumbed and frozen face is stone blind.  And Marc appears in a Google image search as currently enrolled in Med School.  Yay and phew.  Great documentary with one deeply honest, wise and refreshing line: "It's a bunch of crap."

I do not know him personally, but I have heard from people who do know him and work along side him.  And yes, he is a Medical Doctor.

His father had died when he was age 10...& this occured while he was a grown man in college...so why do you say after his father died??

p.s. I saw the documentary & it seems to me like his life was saved, possibly in an unusual way, I'd certanily say not being dead & living on esp & regardless if one is a doctore is more peaceful than burrying your brother...

I so want to know the end of the story. Marc's estrangement with his family and his awkwardness with his new exclusive faith really speaks to so many of our experiences. How did it turn out? Did his sister's love recdeem him?

Very interesting.  I am a born again believer and I was disappointed by Marc's inability to clearly express his faith - it is not difficult to understand.  I agree with Julia that he should live in the world.

I also am a follower of Christ but I tend to disagree with BF saying that Marc had trouble expressing his faith. I don't see the context so I may be wrong but how does one clearly express his faith in the unseen person of Christ to a non believer who is always looking for proof... how does one explain spirit and truth to the carnal mind?

I am re-watching the documentary right now.  I saw Marc's choice to live on The Farm as a valid choice.  I admire the life he chose there.  In fact, if offered, I would be happy to take his place there... seems an idyllic life to me.  I don't understand the fuss.

I listened to this last night after radomly searching past This American Life programs. According to a TAL update, he is indeed a medical doctor. He is also married...to a man who is a Rabbi.

Marc is not married to a man who is a Rabbi--his SISTER who made the documentary is now married to a Rabbi and has 2 kids. Marc is still an Evangelical Christian and in residency as a medical Dr.

According to a re-airing of the radio documentary that Julie made about her brother Marc for This American Life, Marc is in his final year of med school in TX, is still Christian and affiliated with the farm in Alaska. Julie (who, on air, self-identified as a secular Jew and a lesbian) is now married to a rabbi and has started a family with him.

God deals with us as individuals. He does not work with families as groups. In other words, your choice to believe or not is between you and God instead of getting permission from family.  A person who sees their life beyond the now and into the eternity that God promises will seem very different to those who can't see beyond their own nose.

I grew up on "The Farm," although not the same farm Marc did - I grew up in Alaska on an affiliate farm and still stay in contact with the Christian people there, who have been and always will be, my family, although my beliefs and support in living that kind of lifestyle differ.  It was a loving environment where we all worked together, went to church together, and spent a lot of time in the Word.  I memorized huge portions of the Bible, which still remain with me today, very similar to a theological seminary.  It instilled in me a strong sense of values and of personhood.  I think Marc expresses himself well in the video, although his theories are constantly attacked.  As Paul said, (who was a great debater), "the message of the cross is foolishness to them that are perishing . . . "  It's hard to explain to someone who just wants to argue.  I saw Marc recently at one of the church events, didn't have time to talk to him other than say Hi.  He is a very intelligent, spiritual individual still.
