It is a shame that the Dr. could not be more sensitive to your needs at that moment. The sad thing is you should have answered proudly yes I am Jewish because my father is Jewish and the reform movement adopted to accept patriarchal lineage in 1996.

That doctor was an unprofessional, insensitive, ass. He should be censured.
A formal complaint should be made to the facility.

OK, so that loser left your room.  But what is the end of the story?  Did your son have his bris?

My heart goes out to Laurel regarding this story. The way she was treated by the doctor who was an Orthodox mohel was extremely cruel.

I notice some of the commenters seem to think this is an isolated incident.

As the Coordinator of the Half-Jewish Network, I hear many similar stories from adult children and grandchildren of intermarriage from all over the world.

Laurel's story is not an isolated incident. And, frankly, it is not her job to talk back to the mohel or file a complaint with the hospital.

It is time for the Jewish community to recognize the discrimination against adult children of intermarriage.

Anyone interested in learning more and fighting back against the pervasive discrimination against half-Jewish people within the Jewish community is welcome to visit the Half-Jewish Network website:

Cordially,
Robin Margolis

Dr X is a miserable excuse for a doctor, a man and a Jew and a mohel.  I apologise to Laurel (and all the other Laurels out there) that Doctor X (and all who think and act like him) seemingly continue to decide for the entire Jewish world who is or isn’t a Jew.  Judaism would a lot better off with more Laurel Snyders and many less Dr Xs.
