Great article. Couldn't agree more! I have been a bit vocal on this subject ever since I was about to give birth.
I encountered huge opposition in parenting sites, telling me yes, that I would be mutilating my baby blah, blah...
Incidentally, although my husband is Jewish, I'm actually Wiccan and mad about natural methods etc. Well, I got a rude awakening. First of all, I almost refused to have a planned c-section because I wanted it all natural. Daniel talked me into it after a personal friend who was actually my ob/gy (in a private clinic) told me that it was my only safe bet given the fact that the baby was breach and very large... Okay, step number one. Whilst most friends were truly happy for us and our arrival, I got lots of undue comments from other mums. Like I had been 'indoctrinated' etc that the only did the section 'to get more money' and it goes on... I decided to just ignore those comments many of which actually attacked my ability 'to be bothered to give birth!!!" Then we got circumcission. When I read your post I didn't even know you were a woman, never mind a married one. Yes, you got it right, men don't underpeformed because of that. In fact, without going explicit here, Dan is so far my best (this is my husband) and he is circumcised. I come from the UK where most men aren't so I sort of feel cheeky to compare but hey, where do these people get their info from?
I was sure after a fair amount of research that my son wouldn't be missing out when he gets to the age of finding a partner and you are totally correct on the urinary infections. People just tell me, well, you should teach your son to wash! Very funny! (as if I wouldn't!)
Tradition is also important to me and when Dan and I decided to marry we agreed to carry on with our faiths but to bring up the children in one, and we decided on Judaism. My parents are Christian though and they play a part so my son will be exposed to different faiths and of course, eventually, be able to chose for himself but I love a sense of community and well, in the meantime, at least he will have a starting point.
